I love music. I love to listen to music and sing music. I love praise and worship and anything that focuses my thoughts and heart motives on Christ. I have many favorites; they draw me closer to our Savior and Creator. They fill my heart with His love.

But with this song, it’s like someone else saw deep into my soul and wrote what I wanted to but didn’t. It’s by a group called downhere. I saw them in June of 2008 at Stone Mountain Park while attending AtlantaFest, and while struggling with something for a while (putting my name in for leadership selection for this board position), they sang a song that was like God saying, “Go For It.”

Have you ever had a life verse from Scripture or some kind of motto in your life that was more prominent than others? For most of my life, mine has been from the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah. I learned this verse when I was a young girl attending church and missions conferences, always in reference to giving our lives over to God and His work in the world.

The song includes some of these lyrics….

You reach for the deepest hope in me
And call out for the things of eternity.

That’s what God was doing. He had to dig deep into my relationship with Him to pull out something eternal. He was calling me into a God-sized assignment, something I couldn’t do in the flesh, but that was promising to bless many and reap something big. For Him.

Here I am, Lord send me
All of my life, I make an offering
Here I am, Lord send me
Somehow my story is part of Your plan
Here I am

This has been the chorus of my life….that whatever He has given me would be able to be returned as an offering unto Him. That He would call me, that I would answer. That He would continue to write His Name on my heart. That I would continue to acknowledge His work in my life and in my service.

These broken parts you redeem
Become the song that I can sing

He took a mess of a heart and still is recreating it in the image of His Son. He is just that loving and forgiving!  I love how He uses our natural talents, learned skills and spiritual gifts for His purposes. Are you seeing that this message is not just about me but also about you? Yes, you! YOU have so much to offer the Body of Christ, and I encourage you to listen to God’s song over you. What is He saying? How is He calling? Look for the confirmations of His calling in Scripture, in prayer, in conversations with trusted godly people, and just maybe, you’ll hear Him singing His song to you at an outdoor music festival. I did.

Thanks for the opportunity to serve you in the area of Communications for these two years. It’s been an incredibly sanctifying journey.

Somehow my story is part of His plan.

Love,

Melinda

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” Isaiah 6:8 ESV

I greet you all in the name of Jesus Christ!  The Messiah, Our crucified Savior, Our Risen Lord and our soon coming King!  I pray that the Lord has shown HIMSELF nothing but, faithful to you.  We are once again entering into our favorite season within the military . . . it is time to MOVE!  Many of you are experiencing the end of a deployment and the start of a PCS.  Some of you are going to exotic places like, Ft. Leavenworth, Wright/Pat A.F.B., and Rhode Island and let’s not leave out Detroit!  You guys are on the move!  During this busy season of packing and unpacking let us not lose our focus . . . JESUS.  Jesus has great plans for you and HE has already begun to put them into action.  We the NE REGION Board are working hard on your behalf to prepare a place for you once you arrive in our region.  But, know that God is preparing for you as well.  We must remember above all else we are Christians first.  As I was pondering all that is going on in my small world I began to realize that time is drawing close and we must be prepared to meet with our King.  Ladies, The King is coming and HE is coming just for you.  How delightful is that.  Below is a devotion that I wrote and shared with the ladies in attendance at Vision Week.

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME.

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME?

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME!

“Then I saw Heaven open wide-and oh! A white horse and its Rider . . .  His eyes are a blaze of fire, on his head many crowns.  He has a Name inscribed that’s known only to him.  He is dressed in a robe soaked with blood, and he is addressed as “Word of God.” . . . A sharp sword comes out of his mouth . . .  On his robe and thigh is written, KING OF KNGS, LORD OF LORDS.”  Revelation 19:11-16 (The Message)

Every time I read these verses my heart pumps a little faster, my blood starts surging and I get just downright giddy!  My Jesus is coming! And HE is coming just for me! I also find myself daily living as if HE is not coming.  I am guilty of sleepwalking through my days.  My focus being that everyone in my home wears clean clothes, eat at least twice a day and my kids receive some type of education daily.  I seldom pause to remember that MY PRINCE IS COMING! In my mind I know that I have a Savior but, how often do I allow my actions to bear the fruit of that knowledge?  I began to ponder how different my days would be if I were to dwell on the Truth of God’s Word.  How different I would become when the power of God’s Word began to penetrate my daily living.  Ultimately how different those around me would be impacted when my faith met up with Holy Ghost power and began to manifest in my life.  I believe my “problems” would not intimidate me but, inspire me to ask God, believe God then wait on God to deliver.  And when deliverance comes I would accept God’s plan instead of my own.  When asked to do what I believe is impossible I would believe what God says about impossible – He says, “All things are possible to those who believe!” When faced with sadness or sorrow I would choose the gift that only God can give, “we grieve but, not like those who have no hope!” When bombarded with uncertainty I would choose God again and the peace only HE can give, the kind that passes all understanding.  My life would change if I began to live like MY PRINCE WAS COMING.  The cares of this life would not gain a stronghold within my heart because it would be so in love with my PRINCE.

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME. – I believe Jesus is coming but, it won’t be anytime soon and I probably will not live to see it . . . people have been saying that for years!

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME? – What Prince? What we talking about? I have no idea what this talk is all about.

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME! – Yeah Baby! Bring it! COME LORD JESUS COME!

When I embrace each new day with this attitude I will live differently.  Everyone I meet will become important to me.  I will wonder if the lady ahead of me in the Commissary knows my Jesus.  I will pray fervently for opportunities to share the Gospel of Christ.  It will become important to me to minister to as many people the Lord places in my path.  My life will take on the purpose of Christ and not just my own.  I will live a life that draws me closer to the Kingdom of God.  Those around me will be impacted and I will be changed . . . forever.  Eternity begins today and never ends. Remember to take some time and pause, reflect, and remember that you are saved not just for yourself but, for the Kingdom of God!

My family recently traveled to the tropical and very hot Kingdom of Cambodia. It is a third world country stricken with poverty; not only physical, but spiritual too. I was disheartened by the many Buddhist temples and shrines that lined the main roads and were scattered across the county side. My heart felt joy when I identified a small number of churches that displayed a cross above the building; a visible symbol to me and a remnant of HOPE that TRUTH was being proclaimed in this land. There are people who heard the call to missions in this country. A mission is defined as an assignment, task, job, work, charge, undertaking, duty, or operation. “Missions” is the Great Commission that Jesus calls us to fulfill in the book of Acts and the four Gospels.

When I was a young teenager, I felt in my heart God called me to the mission field. However, I didn’t surrender to the call to go into foreign missions and went my own way. I pursued a college degree and upon graduation, married an Airman from my home town. Even though I didn’t step out in faith and obedience when I was young, God had His way of accomplishing His purpose and plan in my life. God foreknew I would marry an Airman who would take me all over the United States and the world. I have had wonderful opportunities to be a missionary in several states and live abroad in predominantly Islamic and Buddhist countries. God is amazing!! Only He could have orchestrated the plans He had for me. I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve my God, husband, children, country and church in the wonderful places He has sent me and will send me.

God has a purpose and plan for each of our lives. It is His plan for us to share the gospel; not only in word, but in actions too. There are many people with physical and spiritual needs. Jesus did not come only to save the lost from their sins; but He fed the hungry, cast out demons, healed the sick, and even raised the dead. That is the power of God! He told the disciples that anyone with faith could do greater things if they ask in His Name. (John 14:11-13). The Holy Spirit will give you boldness and endue you with power to witness and minister to a lost world. He will be the light shining through you in a dark world. Where has God placed you? Are you sharing the gospel and fulfilling the mission that God has planned for you? Are you a living testimony of His salvation and are you demonstrating His love and power in your actions? It is His plan for you to be where you are right now and to use you. Listen to His voice and allow Him to guide your footsteps. Surrender your ‘will’ and step out in faith and obedience to serve Him wholeheartedly. Don’t limit the power of God. Trust in Him and not in your own ability or the gifts of others. God calls us to live by faith, not by sight. Love, minister and proclaim the gospel of HOPE and TRUTH to the people He has placed in your home, neighborhood, school, workplace, and church. If your husband has a military “mission” in a foreign country, take the opportunity to reach beyond the gates of the base. The mission field is all around you. Have you heard and surrendered to The Call to Missions?

What you can do:
* Share the Gospel
* Live the Gospel
* Support missions with tithes and offerings
* Pray for missionaries around the world
* Pray for salvation of the lost

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8

But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. Psalm 33:11

Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.

John 14:11-13

Being a part of the military community, we are always learning new acronyms. One of the fun things about figuring them out is assigning your best guess or your funniest guess to the letters:-) Sometimes these acronyms help us to remember important or memory-worthy information. Although neither of these is military related, two of our latest favs are E.G.O. and W. O. W. E.G.O. stands for Exalt God Only and W.O.W. stands for Women of Wisdom – what Ft. Huachuca calls their seasoned sisters.

We picked up the last acronym during a W.I.L.D. Weekend. Speaking of acronyms – our Trainer bag has a subdued imprint of the W.I.L.D. logo on it. Most likely, Women Intent on Leadership Development is not the first guess most people have when they see it as we travel. As people take a really close look and see it spelled out, plus Protestant Women of the Chapel International underneath – there is usually a little smile that follows or a question. Some of our theme apparel and accessories receive some interesting glances too!

The W.I.L.D. Weekends have been fabulous!  We have incredible godly and dynamic sisters serving on our Regional boards! WoW! It has been such a treat and a joy to partner with them to meet and train this new season’s PWOC leaders! Some of you reading this update were there! We pray that you were as blessed and encouraged as your Training Team was in the time and energy that you invested to be there.

It would have been absolutely grand if all of you in leadership could have been there or were able to attend the upcoming one in your Region! Those of you who are hearing in your spirit a call to leadership would also have been blessed by the information on spiritual leadership and the wisdom shared by the seasoned leaders – our W.I.L.D. WOW!

The main purpose of W.I.L.D. Weekends is definitely not to exclude leaders or pre-leaders. As Brenda shared earlier in her June 9th PWOCI blog entry, the purpose is to provide more intentional spiritual leadership and board position training, as well as an opportunity for board team building as a foundation to the teams being built at your local installations. This is where we start “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12)!

The Leadership Development Team would like to share some of the information presented at this season’s W.I.L.D. Weekends on the PWOCI Blog’s - Leadership Wednesdays. We are going to start off using the acrostic LEADERSHIP over the next 10 weeks or so.  It’s not exactly an acronym, but close!

Look for more of this year’s leadership curriculum in the Leadership Development workshops at the PWOC International Conference in Dallas this November. A few more Web–based resources and possibilities are coming your way too!  Woo hoo! Technology to His Glory!

W.I.L.D. is the Heartbeat of Protestant Women of the Chapel International’s Leadership Development!

The God of All Comfort

On the heels of the Halloween caper were more joy-filled moments. Judy and I got to spend a lot of time together which wouldn’t have happened under different circumstances. We listened to my Matthew Ward CD for a dose of encouragement and inspiration, and we heard good Bible teaching from the likes of Dr. Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindoll, and others. We clung to the words of hope spoken by these godly men as if clinging to life itself.

God will often give me a message from a sound preacher or teacher at just the right time to affirm something He’s taught me, or to encourage my heart. Back in November 2001 He did that through Chuck Swindoll. Chuck described trials other people had endured as he worked through 2 Corinthians 1:3-11, a passage titled The God of All Comfort.

At that time I was miserable, thin and weak, had calcifications developing on my knuckles and toes, and burning fingers that had to be covered with band aids every day. Although this wasn’t anywhere near how bad my condition would get, it was bad enough and it was all I knew.

As I listened to Chuck speak Paul’s words to the Corinthian church I was able to relate. He described much suffering including physical and emotional anguish. In verse 8 Paul mentioned the hardships he and his cohorts endured while in Asia and he even said, “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.” I had those moments. I despaired of life itself.

But I had hope. I knew without a doubt that God had plans to use my tribulation to comfort and encourage other people. Eventually He would turn this ordeal into something purposeful, worthwhile, and life changing. When? I had no idea. How? That was an even greater mystery. The answers to those questions would be revealed at a later time, but there was an immediate purpose for me and my sister made clear in verse 9: “Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.” Despite the urgency of our trials, God wanted us to rely on Him, not on the obvious earthly sources. Namely, doctors, ourselves, or other people. He is the source of all.

The pain we endure always has a purpose. Wrenching our brains to figure it out is futile as I have learned. But I’m desperate for purpose and meaning. I need to know that every bit of misery, loss, heartache, anguish, illness, weakness, hardship, and agony will produce something useful not only for me but for others. Isn’t that why we’re here?

First and foremost we’re here to be in relationship with God through Jesus Christ, but we are the tools He uses to minister to others. Quite often it’s our mutual suffering that lends us credibility with those who need His touch. He has invited us to partner with Him in His grand scheme of salvation and redemption. Through this partnership He uses our suffering.

I felt a call, a purpose, back then. As my body grew weaker my heart grew stronger with the expectation that God would use me one day to make a difference in the lives of others. In the meantime, I had a rocky road ahead of me and I don’t mean ice cream. The clash of the specialists was next.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES:

2 Corinthians 1:10-11, “He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.”

My first attempt at a vegetable garden was a disaster!  I was born and raised a city girl and had moved to the country, in the heart of a farming community.  Several ladies were excited to introduce me to so many new things:  gardening, canning, quilting and even driving a tractor.  We started with gardening.

I quickly learned the amount of effort (make that hard work) that went into growing one’s own food.  With the help of a few friends and a tiller, we eventually had a patch ready.  With great excitement, I made rows and began planting various seeds; zucchini, cantaloupe, watermelon, tomatoes, corn, potatoes and more.  Then I waited to enjoy the fruits of my labor.  The next time I went out to check (several weeks later) the entire garden was overrun with WEEDS.

Now I know at this point some of you are laughing.  But remember, I am a city girl, and no one had mentioned that after you have planted you have to care for, weed and maintain the garden.  I only expected to find fully developed, healthy fruits and vegetables more succulent than any commissary or grocery store.  What a surprise for this girl!

Our spiritual lives are much like a garden.  The seeds that are planted there on a Sunday morning, at PWOC, or by a conversation with a friend, must be watered, nourished and cared for.  And the weeds!  They are constantly working to wrap themselves around our beautiful plantings.  Only consistent, purposeful care can keep out the things that try to change our focus, steal our joy, and defeat our spirit.  I’m sure glad God takes on the job of Master Gardener, aren’t you?  I hope you’re asking Him daily to walk with you through the garden and see what needs His attention.  I know I am.

……my Father is the gardener.  John 15:1

“Everyone who breathes has a mission, has a work. We are not sent into this world for nothing; we are not here that we may go to bed at night, and get up in the morning, toil for our bread, rear a family and die. God sees every one of us; He creates every soul for a purpose.” John Henry Newman

Have you reflected lately on your purpose in life? Are you already aware of the ways that God has gifted you? Have you seen the ways in which God wants to use you in your community? We get so busy and wrapped up in the every day things of life that we sometimes forget the bigger picture. There really is more to life than getting through it day by day. God has made each and every one of us in a unique way with gifts that He wants us to use for His glory.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 says “there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.”

What is the BIG picture God has for you? What is your mission, your work? Are you a teacher, a leader, an encourager, an evangelist? What are you doing today to fulfill God’s plan for your life? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, how do you find them? One simple way can be found in Henry Blackaby’s Experiencing God. Blackaby says to find out where God is already working and join Him. If you see something God is already doing that really excites you, jump in. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. God gave you talents and desires that naturally express where He may want to use you.

1 Peter 4:10 says “each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

Take a minute in your busy schedule to consider your personal calling. The constant list of demands in your daily life can obscure the richness to which you are called. Consider your destiny. What are you doing today that will have eternal significance? Try to fit the little things in your life into the bigger picture. Prioritize your daily activities to include what God has planned for you.

Psalm 34:3 says “Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.”

Have you ever heard this phrase before? Bloom where you are planted. This is a common phrase among Military Wives for sure, as we barely get time to grow some roots before we are plucked from the soil and seemingly cast to the wind, only to try to bloom someplace new. How about Home is Where the Army Sends You? I always stop and admire the charming signs that the concessionaire’s sell at the PX, the kind where you can purchase little tabs to hang underneath them designating each station you’ve lived at before. It hardly seems fair that they generally only come with three or four tabs when we need six or seven, and possibly more before we’re done.

As Military Wives we can often feel like we are just tagging along behind our husbands, moving at the Military’s whim. An afterthought. It can seem discouraging, and may be tempting not to unpack at all or meet the new neighbors. After all, you’ll only be moving again soon. In a world where the rule of thumb is to always use pencil in your address book, it’s easy to feel like you are being cast to the wind. But the truth of the matter is we are where He wants us. He sees each of us individually, loves us each individually and has plans for each and every one of us. You have a calling and a purpose unique to you.

When we received unexpected orders to PCS to Fort Polk in Louisiana with only six weeks notification, it was easy to feel buried under all the responsibilities and things that had to be done. It sure didn’t help that all of my friends expressed their sorrow that we were heading to Polk, their faces looking more appropriate to speaking to someone about the unexpected passing of a beloved family pet. I had planted firm roots in Heidelberg and the prospect of leaving made me feel like crying. I knew that I would be leaving part of myself when I left and wasn’t sure I wanted to set those roots in my new community.

I did though. God reminded me that I was never buried; only planted. I would Bloom here too and if I was willing, I could fulfill His plans for me here. I’m not in Louisiana at the whim of the Army, and not because I am tagging along behind my husband as he serves all over the world. God has a unique purpose for me. Me alone. And unless I open myself to him, and plant my roots, I’ll never be able to bloom and bear fruit for Him.

Look at Ruth. She left her homeland to follow Naomi, even though she could have gone home. She might have felt as we do sometimes, just another victim, tossed about by the world with no control over her own fate. Yet trusting in God, she followed the path he set her on, and was the ancestor of our Lord and Savior. Just as Ruth, we have to trust in His plan for us.

Home is not where the Army sends you. It’s where God takes you. When you stop letting yourself feel like a victim of the Military’s wants and whims, and see yourself as the Heroine of your own story, you will Bloom, you will bear fruit, and you will grow stronger in your Walk with Him

Today I sense some enemy action. What do I mean by that? It appears that Satan is trying to get me all spun up and anxious before PWOC tomorrow. This morning my ID card decided to jump out of my purse, apparently. You know how it is as a military spouse — ya ain’t got no identity without that little piece of laminated personal info.

In the military it goes like this:  No ID card, no identity; No ID card, no getting on post (not easily anyway); no ID card, no commissary; no ID card, no medical appointments; no ID card, you might as well have been vaporized!

This is what happened: I paid a visit to the ever-so-available, and desperately needed Air Force Academy Fitness Center; dropped my ID card into my purse; went to brush my teeth (don’t ask); put my gym bag and purse in a locker; locked the locker securely; and went about my workout. It wasn’t until I finished showering and returned home that I discovered my LIFE was missing!

Now, it is highly unusual for me to lose much of anything, especially my precious government issued uniformed services ID and privilege card. Thank the Father that Jesus recognizes me. Without Him, I’d be nothin’ and I’d get nowhere!

Here comes the prayer: Okay, Lord, I do believe that this is happening for a reason because everything you do in my life has purpose and value. So, show me what you want me to learn from this, and while you’re at it, would you mind having someone turn in my ID at the AFA Fitness Center desk. Thank you so much. Oh, today would be good, you see, I have to get on post early tomorrow to set up for hospitality, AND instead of being in the sanctuary as usual, we have to be flexible and do it all in the fellowship hall, which means I have to have it set up before we start or shortly thereafter, and the gal who is normally there to work with me is on leave … Okay, okay. I really don’t have anything to complain about. My heart is beating, I feel pretty good, I got home safely in our first snow of the year … (yes, women of PWOC, it’s September 21 and it has snowed heavily in parts of Colorado Springs, CO. This is the earliest snow I’ve ever seen). Slip slidin’ away … not really. Just tell me to get back to the story.

Knowing God the way I do, I’m certain that something good will come out of what feels like a total disaster. Oh yeah, Father, please protect me from identity theft. Right now my identity is only missing. I certainly don’t want it stolen and used by someone else. This is serious. Please send a wonderful, honest person to retrieve my existence on this earth and turn it in at the AFA Fitness Center desk. Amen.

Oh, I’m not done yet. This episode is still fresh and I’ve learned so much already. What have I learned? That even when the U.S. Government doesn’t acknowledge my existence, Jesus Christ does. Not only that … He rejoices over my existence and considers me to be of inestimable worth and value. Be encouraged, women! Even when fellow humans don’t acknowledge you as the special, one-of-a-kind creation you are, God the Father regards you as the apple of His eye. His unconditional love and acceptance are immeasurable, and they are worth much more than earthly recognition. Yes, even the recognition that comes with a military ID card.

Back in June, I attended the regional Leadership Weekend about an hour from where I live. These kinds of PWOC events where people gather typically begin with the same kind of sound – that “PWOC Squeal” – you know the one? You show up in the lobby of a hotel and see friends from other installations and other eras in your life, and you let out a squeal of delight of being reunited with dear sisters in Christ.

One of the highlights for me was sitting in on some of the class sessions for local Administrative Coordinators. This is the new position title for the traditional Secretaries, and we’re seeing that it’s more than just taking notes these days. We spent a good part of the afternoon talking about how technology can increase our communication with our ladies and those on our installations. Three levels of PWOC ministry were present in these sessions (local, regional, and international), and that was encouraging as we linked arms and swapped ideas and encouraged each other and prayed for you.

I was thinking about how God has communicated His great love for us. God the Father has been creative and has taken the initiative in bringing about salvation to the lost.  God the Son has been sacrificial and obedient to the Father, allowing love and grace and mercy to flow down to us. God the Holy Spirit worked so tenderly in calling us to be His own and led the writing of the Father’s words into what we now know and accept as the Bible.

Communicating is more than just talking to each other. It’s working together as a unit, as one, for His purposes. It’s getting an idea across that casts vision and promotes the Gospel of Jesus Christ to go forth into the nations.  I encourage you to see yourself as part of something bigger than just your own local PWOC. Look into how you can be involved at the regional and international level. Let’s start by communicating with the Father for each other. Let us pray…
