“This is the confidence we have in approaching God:  that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.” (1 John 5:14-15, NIV)

Have you ever said, “Thank you, Lord, for not answering that prayer!”Have you ever been thankful for those prayers you prayed that were not answered in just the way you had hoped for?  Recently I was looking through some of my prayer requests from the past and I began to give God thanks and praise Him for not answering certain prayers in the way I wanted.  He answered in ways that I could not imagine.  Ephesians 3:20 says He is able to do far more than we can think or imagine.  This verse rang loud and clear as I looked at my pray list. One particular request jumped out at me that I knew God had answered a totally different way than I had prayed.  I thought I was praying His will and it seemed I was praying according to His will.  After praying for months and having others pray with me, the situation just seemed to worsen.  I felt as those God was not hearing me at all. I realized that perhaps I wasn’t praying according to His will. Perhaps God had a different plan and it would be something that I could not think or imagine.  My prayer partners and I started praying that the truth would be brought to light and the truth would set all free and that God’s perfect will would be done in the entire situation. This would mean I would have to trust God completely.  I was not in charge here.  After all, I could not see the big picture but God could.  Within 2 weeks everything began to change, and for the better.  God was working everything out for the good of all and in ways that I could not think or imagine.  My plan that I thought was God’s plan would have been devastating! During this time I had to trust God completely.  I could hear Him saying “I’ve got this!” He certainly did have it all under control.  When we pray we must remember that  He may have a better plan than we can imagine. Let’s ask Him to help us to pray according to His will.

Dear Lord,

We thank you that you answer our prayers.  We thank you that you know our hearts and  You know what’s best for us.  Lord, help us to accept your will and trust you even when we don’t understand. Thank you for the prayers you’ve answered and for the prayers you haven’t answered because you knew a better way.  In Jesus ’name, Amen.

When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.  Romans 6:20-22

Freedom in Christ – Do you have it?

What is freedom in Christ? Is it really possible?  Can we really experience freedom from sin?  John 8:32 says “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”   John 8:36 says “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”   According  to Romans 6:20-22 above, being slaves to sin is freedom from control of righteousness.  Being set free from sin leads to holiness and then to eternal life.  That is real freedom in Christ!  Our Lord  doesn’t want us to be afflicted and oppressed which is like being bound by fetters.  He wants us to be delivered which means to be set free from the past, guilt and pain, bitterness and unforgiveness, or any thing that keeps us in bondage.  Christ paid the ultimate price by dying on the cross so we can experience freedom and life everlasting.  Psalm 119:45 says “I will walk about in freedom for I have sought out your precepts.”  The more we get to know Christ, the more freedom we experience. Genuine freedom is the freedom to serve God!

Dear Father,

Thank you for providing freedom for us in Christ by sending Him to die on the cross for our sins.  Thank you for providing a way for us to let go of “baggage” and be set free!  Help us to exercise our freedom to serve you daily.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The 51st Psalm is a very personal prayer of confession, self-examination and a cry for forgiveness.  Sometime we find ourselves falling short of God’s goodness and mercy. It is obvious that David has been convicted by his sin and his guilt.  He knew that what he did was wrong in God’s eyes and in his own eyes. He knew that his disobedience and sin had broken God’s heart, and broken his relationship with God. And as a result, his spirit and his heart were broken; broken to the point of contrition. In the spirit of repentance he asked God to “Create in him a clean heart and to renew a right spirit within his soul.” We all need to work on having the “Right Spirit” within our hearts. We need to come to God in genuine repentance and open ourselves up to Him at the deepest dimension of our lives because it is the key to our “Spiritual Healing.” Sometimes we allow God into the living room of our hearts, but we don’t allow Him into the basement where all the junk is stored or in the bedroom where we reveal our private selves. David wrote, Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. (Vs 6) and 2 Thessalonians 2:13 talked about a process of cleansing, that is known as “Sanctification.” God wants to dismantle the strongholds of darkness in our inner beings and make us completely His, so we can be set free. Sometimes we think we are serving God; but in the depths of our being there is anger, self-centeredness, resentment, bitterness, confusion, and bondage. God wants to go down into the basement of our personality and clean it up. When we allow the truth to go into our inward parts, that is when we open ourselves to God’s process of “Sanctification”, then we experience lasting inner freedom and peace. When we allow the truth to come in we will discover the kind of joy that David talked about when he said, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness. (vs 7,8)

Father, We thank you that you desire for us to walk in true righteousness.  We cry out to you to for redemption.  Thank you that we are set free of all condemnation.  Thank you that your Word washes us clean and your Holy Spirit comes to comfort us and shows us the continual love of the Father.  In Jesus Name, A-men.

National day of  Prayer is Thursday, May 5. We will focus our prayers this week on making the Lord our refuge and strength.

Psalm 91:2 in the King James reads: I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God, in Him will I trust.

Almighty God, too many times in our lives we look to the world for safety and peace. Our prayer, this National Day of Prayer, is to turn our eyes to you. Help us to dwell under the shadow of Your wings so that when troubles come You are who we run to.

Please turn the hearts of our leaders to Your Holy Spirit for the wisdom needed to lead this great nation that was founded and created with Your strength and guidance. Help us all to realize that without You we cannot survive, but with You we can overcome anything.

Give us a heart, O Lord, that is after Your own heart. Just as King David was a man after Your own heart, You blessed his reign and made Israel enjoy their Golden Years. Let us also enjoy the fruits of following You with our hearts at peace and confident that You will never leave us nor forsake us, and that You will bless our nation because of the love of Your people.

Lord, continue to bring to our hearts to pray for our leaders and all those in authority so that we can truly have peace. Your peace, O Lord, that passes all understanding and delivers us from the snare of the fowler.

We pray these things in Jesus’ mighty name. AMEN

Memorial Day

We remember our heroes today.  We thank God for men and women from the past who have sacrificed for this nation.

“LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.”   Habakkuk 3:2

Dear Father,

We thank you for heroes who stood tall, paid the price, and gave everything for a cause they believed in.  Thank you for the incredible heritage America has.   Thank you for the many ways you have preserved America.  Thank you for your mercy on us through many struggles for freedom.  This week, we remember our heroes.  We remember their words of devotion to You.  We remember the way you sustained them.  We have heard of your fame, Oh God!  We stand in awe of your deeds.  Please renew them again in our day.  We are in need.   In wrath, remember mercy.

We honor those who have gone before.  We honor our righteous heritage.  We honor those who stand in harm’s way today.  Protect them, and protect our nation from within and without.  Thank you for your mercy toward us.

Renew your awesome deeds in our day and turn us back to You.  We love you, In Jesus Name, Amen.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. 17Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

Dear Father,

Give us courage to confess to each other our struggles and hurt.  Give us courage to tell our story to someone.  Give us courage to ask for prayer.  When we hear our sister’s story and struggle, give us a heart to stop and pray for her.  We long to be healed.  We are righteous in the sacrifice of Christ.  Make our prayers full of power, effective to accomplish Your will.  Give us faith like Elijah, who listened to Your Voice and spoke Your Words, affecting even the rainfall.  He was a human being, just like us.  We confess our weaknesses so that we might find our strength in You.  We love you.  In Jesus Name, Amen.

Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime; it is the LORD who makes the storm clouds. He gives showers of rain to men, and plants of the field to everyone.

Zechariah 10: 1

In this passage, rain seems to represent a time of returning to God.  The people are lost and wandering, listening to every voice of human wisdom and even consulting occult wisdom.  These voices lead them off track to a place of desolation.  God is angry that there is no one to lead and comfort His people, no one to care for them.  He comes Himself to restore the strength of His people so they can arise again and fight.  Zechariah says God passes through the sea of their distress and stikes the waves so that the water dries up.

Dear God,

We long for the rain of your Presence.  We long for the rain to come, the rain of spring that brings life.  The rain of returning to You.  Oh, God, we often get lost and wander away, listening to voices of human wisdom and even of the enemy.  These voices do not care for us.  They did not pay the price for our freedom.  Come to us and restore our strength, that we may rise again and fight for what is ours:  our children and our inheritance.  We only want to listen to your voice. Strike the waves in the sea of our distress.  Dry up the waters of desolation, but send the rain (reign) of Your Spirit.  We ask for rain in springtime.

We love you.  In Jesus Name, Amen

Be patient, then, sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains.

James 5:7

I love the clean, fragrant smell of spring rain in April.  This time of year I often get what my family calls, “Spring Fever”.  For me it is not spring cleaning I do, but an almost unstopped need to touch the earth, to dig and to plant.  This year all four of our children worked beside me poking holes in the black earth, dropped impossibly small gray seeds into the holes, and then our vigil of waiting began.  We daily visit the garden to watch for signs of life.   Shouts of joy echo down the street when one of spots another green shoot poking up through the dirt.   It is just as much a miracle to me today as it was when I was 5, planting seeds in a cut off milk container.    Oh how I wish I could see the changes in the seed happening under the dirt, like time lapse photography.

What a picture of God’s dealing in our lives.  (James 5:7 and following)

Dear God,

Thank you for planting Your Word deep in the soil of our hearts.  We long for the day when we are with You face to face, when all of our tears are washed away and all of our questions are answered.  God, strengthen our hearts.  Help us not complain, not judge those around us, help us to endure.  We have seen the outcome of Your dealings, that You are compassionate and merciful.  Give us strength to wait for the spring rain, bringing new life to the desolate seasons.  Father, grace us to pray and praise, to bless and not curse, to patiently endure.  We long for the spring rain of Your Presence and Your Goodness.    We love you, in Jesus Name, Amen.
