“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed”. Mark 1:35

The book of Mark depicts this beautiful picture of Jesus getting up early to pray in a solitary place. I encourage you to do that this week. As soon as you get up, go to a solitary place (closet, bathroom, outside) and pray. Simply ask God to bless your day and lay any issues at His feet. Then spend some time in silence, waiting to hear what He has to tell you. This is an exercise that requires commitment and perseverance because a lot of time, you will not hear anything from God. However the more you do it, the closer you will feel to Him and the better you will be at recognizing His voice. Meanwhile I guarantee you that starting the day at His feet will make your outlook better.

andreaplotner_may09If you’ve seen the movie Sky High (PG), you know that Kurt Russell does a hilarious job overplaying his role as an indulgent superhero parent. When his teenage son, Will, comes of age by “getting his powers” of super- strength, Dad invites him for the first time into the “Secret Sanctum” – the techno basement from which operations are launched and the world is saved. On this particular occasion, Will is rewarded with an X-Box.

Sunday afternoons are restful (ahem) times in our house, and while we were watching that movie this afternoon, I couldn’t help but think of some spiritual parallels.

In Matthew 6:6, Jesus says, “But you, when you go to pray, go into your room, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”   God is in His “Secret Sanctum,” and longs for us to join Him there. When we carve out the time (solitude) and space (solitary) to meet with God, we can experience His deep, abiding, transforming presence which is a reward in and of itself, but also can result in earthly operations being launched and the initiation of world-changing prayers.

Our God is an indulgent parent with every power at His disposal. Don’t overlook the opportunities to join Him in His Secret Sanctum!
