“Inwardly cleansed, interiorly enlightened and inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit, may we be able to follow in the footsteps of your beloved Son.”

This prayer by a fellow saint, Saint Francis of Assisi, is quite arresting isn’t it?

If we consider St Francis’ prayer we see that there is a lot going on inside that enables us to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. In 1 Peter 1:15-16 Peter implores us in our calling and in the light of our redemption, ”just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Jesus likened trying to be holy from the outside to whitewashed tombs  – appearing to be holy & righteous but with nothing inside but dead bones (Matthew 23:27).

The Holman Bible Dictionary defines holiness as “a work of the Holy Spirit on the basis of Christ’s atonement that calls for obedient submission from those who have been saved.” We are holy because of our calling in Christ, because of His atonement for our sins, and because the Holy Spirit continues to minister to our spirits – doing a work in us to make us holy and not just a beautifully whitewashed tomb.

Inwardly cleansed – That’s where our pursuit for holiness starts. As Christ followers “you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11). While we are called to holiness, it isn’t something we have to or can do ourselves.

Interiorly enlightened – Paul prays this for the Ephesians – “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better… that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” There is illumination in knowing our Lord and the hope within us that sets us apart, leads us and empowers us to lead others to and in Christ.

Inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit – There is Stephen – full of the Holy Spirit, Paul – filled with the Holy Spirit, and Peter – while speaking, the Holy Spirit coming on all who were listening to his message (Acts 7,10 and 13). These are examples of the Holy Spirit’s “inflammation” of the power of God – examples of holiness in action. It was this same earnest desire and infilling that brought martyred missionary, Jim Elliot, to pray, “Saturate me with the oil of Thy Spirit, that I may be aflame. Make me Thy fuel O flame of God.”

No whitewashed tombs here.

Will you approach our Lord with such prayers desiring His holiness to ignite you to follow in His steps?

For over a year, I’ve been involved in something that will change the course of the PWOC ministry. Is changing the face of ministry as we know it.

It is an idea that we have a target group. A demographic. An actual person that we’re ministering to. And we’ve named her.

So these are some of the words that I shared with the PWOC local leaders in the Southeast Region on Friday night…

First of all, I read for them, Psalm 32. Read it. I read it in the ESV. I let them know they need to be right with God first. To know His love and forgiveness. Then to be sure their PWOCs are environments of that same forgiveness (thinking of the Lord’s Prayer….), to be places of deliverance for those in need…

And then I started asking the questions….and the meddlin’ began….

I want to introduce someone to you.

She’s about 23 or 24. Maybe you’ve seen her in the commissary or at the neighborhood playground.

Comes from a decent family – but very likely came from a broken home. Did well enough in high school to graduate and married soon after. She’s spent much of her (short) married life apart from her spouse. But not so much time apart. After all, they do have two kids. (I can say this. We have five…)

She finds herself alone sometimes and wonders what she’s doing on this base without him.

She has some friends, but everyone’s so focused on their own problems to really be concerned about hers.

She’s up late at night, probably surfing the net or collecting jewelry, farm animals or vegetables on Facebook games….or just trying to connect….trying to see if there’s anyone out there who might listen….

Her name is Megan.

Megan wants to know something.

She wants to know if what you say about this Jesus is real.

She wants to see it work.

She wants authenticity and simplicity yet is highly technical and receives her news and interaction with others online.

She wants to know if it’s worth it to bring her kids to a childcare room with people she doesn’t know.

She wants to know if it’s worth it to come to a building and drop off her kids and go to have coffee and muffins. Coffee and muffins? Really? She can do that at home.

Is it worth it to sit through a class on parenting or marriage or finances or deployment or worship (what was that one again?) or some guy named Matthew who writes about obscure ideas like being salt and light?

Yes, it is worth it! It’s worth it that she come to PWOC and find refreshment for her soul. It is worth it for us to pour into her life the very life of Jesus. It is our responsibility and privilege to SHINE the light of Christ. For Megan.

Here’s our challenge as leaders.

How important is it to you that she comes to your PWOC?

How important is it that she hears the Gospel of Christ?

That she sees real relationships? That she be loved unconditionally?

Please let your PWOCs be about reaching out to the unchurched.

Snacks and childcare do bring people in some people — and that is important.

But Megan’s generation wants real answers without the gimmicks.

What they really need is Jesus, even though they may not know that at the time.

Putting a face and a name on a generation of unchurched, hurting women has the potential to change the course of our Bible studies, our leadership training, our visual graphics and types of publicity, our purpose for “doing church.” I pray that this description of Megan will spread like wildfire – that it will cast vision in PWOC International and cause us to be intentional about ministering to those for whom Christ died.

We agree together that God has given us different types of leaders to build us up and train us. We call forth these leadership gifts in our body.  We ask for God’s favor, protection, wisdom, and peace to guard leaders.  We pray they would be strengthened in their responsibilities to equip us.  We pray for unity in our faith and in the knowledge of Jesus.  We pray that we would each grow and mature and that we would know the truth and speak it in love.  We pray we would become more and more like Jesus, the head of us all. Help each of us to learn and do our special part so that we can help each part of our wonderful ministry to grow and be healthy and full of love. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Ephesians 4:11-16

National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 6 We will focus our prayers this week on America and our military community.

Dear God,

We humbly bow before you now on behalf of our nation.  God, forgive our sins and the sins of our nation.  God, we confess today we need You.  We ask for the precious blood of Jesus to cover the iniquity of our land.  We deserve judgment, but we ask for your mercy.  Please pour out Your Spirit and send a great awakening to America once again.  You are only hope.

God, please give our leaders wisdom and humility.  We ask forgiveness for decisions that are made against Your will.  Give us courage to stand for truth.  Restore righteousness to our land.

God, grant our military strength, endurance and grace.  Please minister to military leaders at every rank and level.  Draw them to Yourself.  Place people around them who will shine their light brightly.  Be with our chaplains as they minister to soldiers and families. Revive their weary souls.  Comfort our military families. Bind our marriages together with cords of love and covenant that cannot be broken.  Carry our military children in your arms.  Be with every lonely wife, every lonely soldier.  Lift up our widows and orphans.  We ask you to heal us from the traumas of war. Protect us from evil.

This nation was founded on righteousness, we ask for a return to our roots.  Father, we love you.  In Jesus Name, Amen.
