A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:7b-10
It’s harvest time. What are we reaping? If we spend time reading to our kids when they are young, they will be early readers. If we spend time at the gym, our bodies will look and feel better. If we plant bulbs in the fall, we will see gorgeous blooms in the spring. All the good we have comes from God: our families, our jobs, our homes, and all of our possessions. It’s a farm He has given us. A farm? Yup, a farm, or maybe a vineyard. All that stuff is on loan to us. It really all belongs to him. We are just tenants on a farm that is owned by God; we are the laborers. He provides the soil, the sun, the rain, the bees, and everything we need for a good crop.
What are we going to do with it? Be lazy bums and not do any work and let the ground go fallow? Act like it belongs to us and not Him? Take credit for all the good things happening on our farm? Treat our blessings like something we earned or deserved because of our work? Take the landlord and His gracious riches for granted? Forget all about the Landlord because we are too busy doing other stuff?
If we spend our time on eternal things, we will reap eternal crops. There are lots of chores that need to be done. Some of them do not hold eternal value, but still have to get done. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Look around, there is Kingdom work going on all about you. God’s Word is living and active, so any time spent in the Word will be fruitful. Daily time in the word is even better. Where is God working around you? Join in! Plug in. Don’t give up doing good things. Keep going. Rest weekly and when needed. Be encouraged that the Lord sees and knows the good things you are doing, even the nitty gritty tasks that you think go unnoticed.
