“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed”. Mark 1:35

The book of Mark depicts this beautiful picture of Jesus getting up early to pray in a solitary place. I encourage you to do that this week. As soon as you get up, go to a solitary place (closet, bathroom, outside) and pray. Simply ask God to bless your day and lay any issues at His feet. Then spend some time in silence, waiting to hear what He has to tell you. This is an exercise that requires commitment and perseverance because a lot of time, you will not hear anything from God. However the more you do it, the closer you will feel to Him and the better you will be at recognizing His voice. Meanwhile I guarantee you that starting the day at His feet will make your outlook better.

muriels-devo-picture“As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

This statement by Joshua came at the end of a long and fruitful life. Joshua was not a king, nor a judge or a prophet. He was a soldier, who gave his life to God. He was in the desert with Moses; He defeated the Amorites; He crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land; He conquered Jericho. If you went to church as a kid, those are your Sunday School lessons.

Joshua knew firsthand the power of God. He knew to obey and serve Him. When Joshua made the statement above, he was talking to all the Israelites and reminding them of who they were serving. At Shechem, he renewed the covenant.

Joshua was a leader by example. When he declared “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”, he was not only referring to his close family but also to everybody in his household and his sphere of influence. The rest of the people declared right there and then they, too, would not forsake God and that they would serve Him. They knew that Joshua meant what he said because he lived it every day.

What I find the most fascinating about this passage is how the story ends: “Israel served the Lord throughout the Lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.” Joshua 24:31. What a testimony that is to Joshua and how he lived his life.

How we live our lives will influence people in our family and our community. We do not need to preach to convert. We need to live it.

Will you stand today and say, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord?”

muriels-devo-pictureTake my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  Matthew 11:29

As women we often tend to do too much.  As military wives we do too much because so much needs to be done.  We try to be all to everybody.  When you feel burdened and weary, you cannot be a blessing to others.  Take care of yourself, eat right, sleep, rest, exercise, do something fun!  Take care of your family.  Do not cook a fancy meal for another family and take yours to the burger drive-through.

Always be there for your husband. He takes priority over your ministry.

You should not feel stressed or burdened when serving God.  His yoke is easy and His burden light.  If you feel overwhelmed you might not be doing what God called you to do.  More than likely you are doing what you are called to do and what you think other people want you to do.  This is your key to stop, pray, talk to a friend and start leading from His rest.
