Have you ever got a song stuck in your head, and couldn’t figure out where it came from or, more importantly, how to get it out?  For the past several days I have had this song playing and re-playing in my head.  Feel free to sing along…

“What the world needs now is love, sweet love.
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.
What the world needs now is love, sweet love-
No, not just for some but for everyone.”

Now, it’s not necessarily a bad song, but after a while, enough is enough.  Unfortunately I found this particular song to be not only catchy, but persistent.  So rather than fighting it, which wasn’t working anyway, I decided to embrace it and just hum along.  I love that God can use anything to speak truth into our lives, even random little songs.  As I began to hum along with the lyrics running through my mind, I felt God reveal to me afresh that in the midst of this gift-giving season, what the world really does need is love, most definitely His love, but also ours.  And not just some people, not just those we like or those who are easy to love, but everyone, even those we find unlovable.  Without question loving others can be difficult.  It is often inconvenient.  It requires time and energy.  It requires us to be focused on others rather than ourselves.  But it is also the best means we have to show others Christ.

Matthew 22:37-39 tells us “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Like it or not, my friends, we are called to love.  It won’t always be easy.  It won’t always be convenient, but it will always bring blessing.  So sisters, will you join me in choosing to give others what they really need this season – a little more love?

Did you know that God is love? Not just that He has the capacity to love, but that He is love. This is an immutable part of who He is. It is as true for Him as it is for me to say that I am a woman. No matter my emotional or physical state, my womanhood never changes. Likewise God is love. In fact, He is perfect love. I just love that about Him and knowing that it will never change gives me peace. The truth that God is love is foundational for me. I learned it as a young girl growing up in church. I can still hear the Sunday school teacher reciting 1 John 4:7-8 to us.  “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

I am so thankful for her teaching because as an adult I have learned that the highest calling we will ever have is to love. The reason the calling is so great and so high is because our love is not to be limited to only those who are nice to us, or those who never give us any grief. As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ we are called to love everyone. When Christ was asked which is the great commandment in the law? He responded, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the first and great commandment. “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’ “On these two commandments hang the Law and the Prophets.” Notice the love we are called to have for the Lord and the love we are called to have for others. None of Christ’s words of love were conditional. If it were conditional then it would not be supernatural.

As I read on in 1 John 4 I discovered that I am not just to have an earthly kind of love but according to verse 18 a love that is capable of casting out fear. This verse speaks to me of a powerful love.  Now before we all get overwhelmed with thinking that this kind of love is impossible, let me just say that apart from God we can never love like that. I can testify that I have tried to love people apart from God and I always fail miserably. Learn from my mistakes and run to He who is love and allow Him to fill you with His love that your joy may be full. He will take all His perfect love and pour it into your imperfect heart and enable you to love everyone. You will find yourself loving beyond your mind, will or emotions. You will love with power and without fear. You will begin to run to Him every day asking Him to fill you afresh with His perfect love.  So I ask you again sisters, did you know that God is love?

Praying that you allow God to minister His love to you that He might minister through you this second week of advent.

6 For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,
[a] Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9: 5-7

Dear Abba,

Thank you for sending us your precious firstborn son.  Thank you for His Kingdom Government.  We rejoice in you Wonderful Counselor.  Give us wisdom and heal us.  We honor you Mighty God; reveal your dunamis power through us!  We place our security in you, Everlasting Father.  Guide us, mentor us, connect us to your heart, bless us and ignite us with your purposes for us.  Prince of Peace, thank you that you are crushing Satan under our feet.  Thank you that you are giving us authority to break chaos.  Thank you that your garrison our hearts when we dwell upon your goodness.

Let your government and peace increase in me, in my local PWOC, in my region, and in our chapels and homes around the globe.  As we Arise because you Extend Your Scepter, let us be ambassadors of your justice and righteousness in our own spheres.  In Jesus Name, Amen.

Hope and Holiness are the Heart of Advent. Advent derives from the Latin word ‘advenio’, which means “coming to”. Advent is a time in which Christians focus on Christ our King coming into the world. It is a tradition in some churches to celebrate advent with a lighting of advent candles. A purple or blue candle is lit the second week to symbolize the royalty of Jesus. As we prepare our hearts during the second week of advent for the celebration of His birth, may we reflect on the promises that God made to mankind and the Hope (blessed assurance) that these promises provide. Hope is grounded in His promises. He promised through the prophets that a Savior would come. Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us, is that Savior. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The birth of Christ was God’s perfect plan from the beginning to come into the world to redeem man from sin that entered the world in the Garden of Eden. Titus 1:2 says, “a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.” Faith in Jesus must be accompanied by repentance of sin. Acts 20:21 teaches, “I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus”. Through faith, Christ dwells within us by the power of the Holy Spirit. “Christ in you, the Hope of Glory.” (Col. 1:27b)

Advent tells the story of two arrivals: the birth of Christ and his return. Christians should prepare their hearts for the advent of Jesus’ second coming, His glorious return. It has been 2000 years since Jesus was born. Many people may be wondering, where is he? When will he return? May we reflect on the promise Jesus made that He will ‘come again’ and that we will spend eternity with Him. Jesus promises in John 14:3, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” Jesus desires to return to a bride that is Holy, righteous, set apart and living for Him. It is Jesus who makes us righteous. It is the Holy Spirit dwelling within you that makes you Holy. It is His holiness. There is nothing we can do to attain holiness apart from Him. Luke 3:8 tells us that our lives should “produce fruit in keeping with repentance”. May we daily examine our lives for sin, spend time in the presence of our King in prayer and His word, and love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Hebrews 12:2 reads, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. He will refine us and make us Holy if we are His children. I Peter 1:16 commands, “for it is written, Be holy, because I am Holy.” The 2009/10 PWOCI theme verse is 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” God has chosen us to be His people. Let us be a Bride that is prepared for the Bridegroom. Maranatha, Come Lord (King) Jesus!!

I have a confession.  Christmas is not my favorite time of the year.  Please, don’t misunderstand me.  You will not hear me grumble, “Bah, Humbug.”  It is just that Christmas is such a stressful time.  Did I give the “right” gift?  Did I remember to send cards to everyone I am supposed to?  Is my house decorated properly?  Will our Christmas savings be enough to ensure we stay debt free?  So many things distract me from the true HOPE of Christmas.  Instead of Christmas, I have learned I need to focus on ADVENT.  Dictionary.com defines advent as (1) a coming into place, view or being; arrival; (2) the coming of Christ into the world; (3) the period beginning four Sundays before Christmas, observed with the commemoration of the coming of Christ into the world; and (4) the Second Coming.  Wow!  Now, I CAN get excited about that!
As a child, Christmas was about the hope and excitement of the gifts I would find under the tree on December 25th.  When I took ownership of my faith, Christmas became something fresh and new.  I experienced a new HOPE!  For me ADVENT represents the excitement of Psalm 130:5 which says, “I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His Word I put my hope.”  Christmas may not be my favorite time of the year, but advent sure is!  I pray you will discover a fresh hope during this season of advent.

“…For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…” Jeremiah 29:11

This has always been one of my favorite scriptures… but, this particular truth has taken on new meaning for my family this year. We found out sometime this spring that my husband would be heading off for his 4th deployment overseas. The thing that I struggled with the most was the fact my husband was going to be deployed with a “non-deployable” unit… Although we had hoped to be stable for 3 years before the army would again send him overseas… the Lord had other plans! From this scripture, I know the Lord wants me to prosper. I looked up various definitions of the word prosper and here is what I found it to mean; to thrive (more than just surviving), steadily grow (where He has called me), and undergo a transformation (through my circumstance). We may not always know why the Lord brings certain circumstances into our lives, we just need to trust that His plan is PERFECT! It also gives me peace knowing that in His infinite wisdom, He has the “big picture” in mind!

Where are you putting your trust, hope and confidence… is it in the world or your circumstance? How about your spouse or your kids, your physical health or your financial well-being? Make Christ your one HOPE and the one constant in your life…even in the ever changing military life! I encourage you to meditate on this scripture as well when the Lord calls you into a new season or unexpected change in your life!

Find rest, Oh my soul, in God alone; my hope (expectation in the KJV) comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.                                                                        Psalm 62:5-8 NIV
